AssetSmart: CEO Interview

Space Tech Expo spoke to Christopher Campbell, President and CEO of AssetSmart, to find out more about his role, the changing industry and what sets AssetSmart apart from other software solution companies.

Christopher Campbell has been President and CEO of AssetSmart, a Calabasas-based asset management software company, for more than 15 years and has built, sold and supported advanced software for 35 years. He has strong operational expertise, having managed all aspects of AssetSmart. He has guided the company’s technology through the mainframe, client/server, web and mobile eras and has worked closely with some of the world’s largest high-tech organizations to more effectively manage their assets. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Quantitative Economics from the University of California at San Diego.

Please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?

I have held key roles with AssetSmart for more than 25 years and took the position of President and CEO in 2004. I oversee all aspects of the company’s day-to-day operations from the Calabasas, CA headquarters. As we are a product-focused business with very large, high-tech customers, I follow R&D, quality and customer service very closely.

What inspired you to join this company?

In college I had decided on software industry management as my career path, and had also studied and become interested in economics and increasing the efficiency of various business processes and organizations via technology and software. AssetSmart was a natural fit. I started working for AssetSmart in the early days on its single point cataloging product offering while I was still in college. AssetSmart’s patent-pending single point cataloging service offering is still very relevant in the marketplace today, saving companies money by adding naming structure to the equipment assets, which allows engineers to quickly identify and find an equipment item or substitute based on performance criteria. It’s been an amazing experience helping to steer the technology direction of several generations of AssetSmart solutions across mainframe, mini-computer, client/server and web-based environments.

What do you think sets your company apart from your competitors?

AssetSmart is a veteran-owned commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software solution innovator and supplier to some of the world’s largest technology organizations. We provide the most comprehensive suite of integrated asset, tooling, test equipment and material management solutions for aerospace, defense, electronics, communications, manufacturing and government organizations. Our cross-platform database support (Oracle and MS SQL Server) and AssetSmart’s open web and mobile-based architecture are key differentiators in the marketplace. We view our customers as long-term partners and no customer has ever outgrown our robust, scalable enterprise software solution.

What are the key opportunities and challenges your company faces at present?

AssetSmart sees tremendous growth potential in the test equipment service management marketplace. AssetSmart’s modular system offers seamless integration, navigation, and common tables and utilities that enhance the user experience and eliminate data redundancy, siloed systems, spreadsheets and expensive ERP system customizations to deliver total visibility and best business processes in calibration, inspection and testing activities as well as in asset accountability and utilization processes.

Are there any new technology developments that you are working on at the moment? Can you tell us about them?

AssetSmart’s next-generation native mobile application – SMART | AMIIX II. This major leap forward empowers mobile workers to execute any AssetSmart transaction, inquiry or update, from anywhere in the world, on any device (PC, barcode reader, tablet or smartphone) in real time. Users can also work ‘disconnected’ from a network with the latest necessary data housed locally in an industry-standard open-source SQLite database. Once a connection is re-established, all changes are reconciled and uploaded to a central server via an automatic bi-directional synchronization process. AMIIX II is architected for high-volume use in high-security mission-critical environments such as manufacturing shops, flight test ranges, warehouses, R&D and metrology labs. It provides many new benefits and savings through more timely, accurate and complete capture of, and accessibility to, vital asset and service management information.

What would you say most excites you about your role?

My background is highly technical and I enjoy being involved in the ongoing technological evolution. At present, it excites me most to see the product and company evolve to be a market leader within mobile asset management. I also very much enjoy working with our great customers as well as our fantastic team. I have met and learned from thousands of smart and resourceful individuals over the years.

How do you think the industry will develop within the next five years? Can you tell us about the key trends emerging?

In today’s tech-driven economy, workers are often outside a traditional office environment and this trend is increasing. Concurrent with this, the ‘Boomers’ are retiring and a whole new generation of tech-savvy workers are entering the economy. AMIIX II extends user-friendly mobile access to Asset Management 360 (AM360), the industry’s most tightly integrated and flexible asset management platform, through billions of mobile devices running Google Android and Apple iOS operating systems. We are excited to be aggressively exploring many new applications for the latest mobile technologies in our quest to better serve the dynamic asset management and technology service management markets.

What do you hope to achieve at the show and what connections do you hope to make?

AssetSmart looks forward to exhibiting for the first time at Space Tech Expo. We welcome the opportunity to connect with aerospace companies and equipment and service providers at the conference. We have a proven asset management solution with a strong track record in the aerospace industry.
