Space Tech Expo 2018 Roundup

Space Tech Expo USA impressed yet again last month as 3,452 attendees from across the space industry gathered at the Pasadena Convention Center for three days of learning, networking and business. Here is our roundup of the best bits from the 7th annual show.

Conference: Battle of the launchers

The keynote panel on the first day of the conference consisted of speakers from Bryce Space and Technology, Virgin Orbit, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Aerojet Rocketdyne and United Launch Alliance discussing the next generation of launchers. With so many excellent speakers, the room was packed out. Delegates listened closely as launcher experts debated increased collaboration between commercial and governments, reusability and recent launches conducted by the industry.

Open Tech Forum: Space proofing computers

A stand out session from the Open Tech Forum was Markus Borsand from RUAG Space presented on improving the reliability of satellite and launcher computers based on commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components. Drawing on his decades of experience in the satellite industry, Markus presented techniques for designing highly reliable satellite and launcher computers based on COTS components based on concrete examples.

Phase FourProduct Showcase: Propelling to the stars with plasma

Visitors to the Phase Four booth on Thursday morning were treated to a live presentation of their radio frequency thruster (RFT) – the smallest plasma thruster available on the market. crowds gathered round to catch a glimpse of the RFT which brings the benefits of high-thrust electric propulsion to a simple, modular, and mass-manufacturable solution. With the increased demand for more satellites in orbit, Phase Four is at the forefront of the propulsion technology that will make it possible.

Networking: Tuesday reception

After the excitement of the first day, it was time to wind down with a drink at the Networking Reception. A perfect opportunity for attendees to make new connections and meet up with old friends in a relaxed environment. Lively conversations and conviviality were to the fore as the chance to talk shop was grabbed by our guests, who came together in unprecedented numbers.

Exhibition: Hundreds of space solutions

This year’s exhibition showcased more technology and solutions than ever before! Exhibitors came from across the full space supply chain, including: NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, BAE Systems, Boeing, The Aerospace Corporation, Element, ENPULSION GmbH, Momentive and more. 60% of booth space has already been snatched up for next year. Contact us to secure your spot in 2019.
